Vibration Reduction Technology for Jumbos

Shakedown Mats have been independently tested and proven to reduce vibration transmission to operators by up to 21%.

Vibration injuries are most commonly split into Hand Arm Vibration (HAV), Whole Body Vibration (WBV) and the lesser known Foot Transmitted Vibration (FTV).

​

HAND ARM VIBRATION (HAV)  is caused by long term exposure to hand held vibrating tools. It effects the circulation in the hands and fingers with the most common injury being "white finger", common in air leg miners.

A common injury that some Jumbo operators experience is

WHOLE BODY VIBRATION (WBV) caused by poorly designed or poorly maintained vehicles, platforms or machinery. WBV can cause or exacerbate other health effects such as:

• Lower back pain (damage to vertebrae and discs, ligaments loosened from shaking)

• Motion sickness

• Bone damage

• Varicose veins/heart conditions (variation in blood pressure from vibration);

• Stomach and digestive conditions;

• respiratory, endocrine and metabolic changes;

• impairment of vision, balance or both;

• reproductive organ damage.

The longer a worker is exposed to WBV, the greater the risk of health effects and muscular disorders.

More specifically Jumbo operators are exposed to

FOOT TRANSMITTED VIBRATION (FTV) caused by long term exposure to vibration through their feet from standing on a vibrating platform which can lead to "white feet/toes". A symptom of which is blanching of the toes, and tingling and numbness in the feet and toes.
